Founder Story
morton ray
In 1973, Morton Ray commenced the design of the first electric outboard motor in the confines of his basement. With a distinguished academic background from West Point Academy and an advanced degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, he recognized the potential to enhance the motors of that era, which were primarily conversions from gasoline.

By the following year, Mort had advanced to manufacturing motors in his basement. One of his early designs is pictured on the left alongside a young Doug Ray. Over the course of more than 40 years, Morton’s unwavering dedication to refining the design, enhancing reliability, and improving efficiency of the Ray motor established his significant legacy in the industry.
After Morton’s passing in 2018, his vision for creating reliable and environmentally safe motors has been proudly upheld by his son, Doug Ray (center in picture), and grandson, Austin Ray (left in picture).
