About Ray Electric Outboards

what we do

Since 1973, Ray Electric Outboard Motors have been proudly manufacturing the original electric outboard motor. As pioneers of electric propulsion, we designed and patented the first electric outboard motor built as a primary power source, not a modified trolling motor or a converted gas engine. Built with pride in the USA, our motors embody innovation, craftsmanship, and a commitment to sustainable boating.

our values

For over 50 years, we’ve been committed to building and improving the Ray Electric Outboard Motor so it can handle the demands of daily use while delivering exceptional longevity with minimal maintenance. As we look ahead, we’re focused on developing motors that are faster and stronger, so you can get even more out of every trip on the water.

We’re proud to carry on Morton Ray’s legacy, crafting every motor with the same dedication and expertise, working with skilled American machinists, electricians, and painters, and supporting local craftsmanship in the USA.

Founder Story

morton ray

In 1973, Morton Ray began designing the first electric outboard motor in his basement. A West Point graduate with an advanced degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon, he saw an opportunity to improve on the electric motors of the era, which were mostly rough conversions from gas engines.

Over more than 40 years, Morton’s dedication to refining the design, improving reliability, and increasing efficiency built the Ray name into a fixture of the industry. After Morton’s passing in 2018, that legacy continued under new ownership committed to keeping his vision alive. Today, the Ray Electric Outboard is proudly built in Virginia, not far from where Morton first built it in his basement. As proud, happy Ray customers ourselves, we’re excited to carry that legacy forward for many more years to come.

What customers think about us

We are now entering the eleventh season powering the 32' Blue Heron with the same reliability we've come to expect in each of the past ten years. Absolutely no repairs have been required. In fact, we haven't replaced any of the batteries. I suspect this is due to the efficient system and it's electronic controls. Reliaility is taken for granted. . .it always works.

Seneca Creek, Maryland State Park - Tour Boats
My total down time with this motor is zero.

Baltimore, Maryland - Jon Boats
I have owned and operated electric outboard motors for over 20 years. I have carefully reviewed the design and engineering of all electric outboards available and this one provides better performances as well as quieter and more reliable operation. No problems are evident and the system has exceeded all expectations. I cannot emphasize enough that this electric motor system is the "Cadillac" of the industry.

Lake Barcroft, Virginia - Pontoon Boat
I bought a 22 foot pontoon for my electric motors only lake. After researching electric motors and seeing issues with other brands I found Ray Marine. I was worried about not having enough power for my larger boat, so I went with the 60 volt. Now I'm motoring with power to spare! Fastest boat on the Lake! Couldn't be happier.

Our Ray Motor has been in service here for twenty years and has been one of the most reliable pieces of equipment which we use. It powers the boat on several tours each week. . .it is very quiet running and so allows a close approach to wildlife. Birds, fish, White-tailed deer, and alligators are not alarmed by the soft sound of the motor. We operate with no fuel or oil abroad so it is completely non-polluting.
